What are system rules in Atlassian Automation?
In Jira Cloud, some project templates come with automation rules already set up - these are called system rules. There are currently no system rules in Confluence.
System rules are only created upon project creation; you canât convert a regular rule into a system rule, or vice-versa. They also canât be deleted, but they can be enabled and disabled on the rules list. To make this easier, you can use the System rules
label on the rules list to quickly see your projectâs system rules.
When system rules run, they donât count towards your usage.

Add system rules to your project
You can add these rules to your project by following these steps:
Go to Project settings > Automation
Select ⦠> Add system rules
However if your project wasnât created using one of the project templates listed above, then you wonât have the option to add system rules.
Things to note about system rules
System rules canât be modified: The components within a system rule can be edited, but you canât add or remove any components. To modify the behaviour of a system rule, youâll need to disable the rule, make a copy of it, and modify the new rule instead. However, if you do this, the new rule that you create will count towards your usage every time it runs.
System rules will always be created with a project: If a project template includes system rules, then those rules will always be created when the project is created - this will be true, even if you stop project admins from creating automation rules.
